Public Health England has launched a new strategy to address current and future infectious diseases

According to Public Health England’s (PHE) new report, 19 new genetic mechanisms of antibiotic resistance in bacteria have been discovered in the last ten years in the UK. Majority of the newly discovered antibiotic resistance mechanisms caused resistance to the last-resort antibiotics. In addition, 12 completely new infectious diseases were detected for the first time in England over the same time period, such as swine flu, Middle East respiratory syndrome, and monkeypox. PHE is a UK’s national public health agency and has now released a five-year strategy, which seeks to strengthen PHE’s ability to prevent, detect, respond to, and reduce the impact of infectious diseases. This strategy includes a focus on containment and control of antibiotic-resistant infections. Antibiotic resistance has become a global threat to public health, and these latest trends threaten modern medicine’s ability to treat bacterial infections in the future.
